چکیده

We investigate the acceleration of particles via the second-order Fermi process in the lobes of giant radio galaxies. Such sites are candidates for the accelerators of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We focus on the nearby FR I radio galaxy Centaurus A. This is motivated by the coincidence of its position with the arrival direction of several of the highest energy Auger events. The conditions necessary for consistency with the acceleration timescales predicted by quasi-linear theory are reviewed. Test particle calculations are performed in fields which guarantee electric fields with no component parallel to the local magnetic field. The results of quasi-linear theory are, to order of magnitude, found to be accurate at low turbulence levels for non-relativistic Alfvén waves and at both low and high turbulence levels in the mildly relativistic case. We conclude that for pure stochastic acceleration to be plausible as the generator of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays in Centaurus A, the baryon number density would need to be several orders of magnitude below currently held upper-limits.

Mass entrainment and turbulence-driven acceleration of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in Centaurus A

Observations of the FR I radio galaxy Centaurus A in radio, X-ray and gamma-ray bands provide evidence for lepton acceleration up to several TeV and clues about hadron acceleration to tens of EeV. Synthesising the available observational constraints on the physical conditions and particle content in the jets, inner lobes and giant lobes of Centaurus A, we aim to evaluate its feasibility as an u...

Spectral indices , particle ages , and the ambient medium of giant radio galaxies

We present a spectral aging study of a sample of 5 giant radio galaxies based on radio continuum data obtained at frequencies between 326 MHz and 10.6 GHz. Using synchrotron loss models, we determined injection spectral indices and particle ages where possible. The results suggest ages not older than 4·107 yr, a value that is typical for radio galaxies with “normal” sizes. From equilibrium cons...

Thermal and Non - Thermal Infrared Emission from M 87

We discuss images of M87 from 3.6 to 160 μm obtained with Spitzer. As found previously, there is an excess in the far infrared over a simple power law interpolation from the radio to the resolved nonthermal features in the mid-infrared and optical. We show that this excess is most likely warm dust in the galaxy itself, and that the properties of this emission component are similar to the far in...

SGRS J0515−8100: a Fat-Double giant radio galaxy

We present here the first detailed study of a giant radio galaxy of the FatDouble type. The lobes of the double radio galaxy SGRS J0515−8100 have transverse widths that are 1.3 times their extent from the center, their surface brightness is the lowest among known giant radio sources and the lobes have relatively steep radio spectra. We infer that these wide lobes were created as a result of a h...

UHECRs from the Radio Lobes of AGNs

We report a stochastic mechanism of particle acceleration from first principles in an environment having properties like those of Radio Lobes in AGNs. We show that energies ∼ 10 eV are reached in ∼ 10 years for protons. Our results reopen the question regarding the nature of the high-energy cutoff in the observed spectrum: whether it is due solely to propagation effects, or whether it is also a...
